Myrtis Mae Gilbert was born February 28, 1948 to the late Josiah "Bubsy" Gilbert and Martha Fickens Gilbert in Beaufort, SC.

She was educated in the public schools of Beaufort county.  Myrtis was a very scholarly student.  She received a distinguished high school diploma, and later furthered her education at Voorhees College, where she received a BA degree in US History.  Upon graduation, she moved to New York, where she was employed as a social worker.

Myrtis was the epitome of a loving mother, sister, and dear friend to many.  Her warm spirit and charming personality will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Due to failing health, Myrtis returned to Beaufort for a while.  She lived her remaining years in Columbia, SC.

On Friday, October 25, 2013 at Providence NE Hospital in Columbia, SC, Myrtis Mae Gilbert entered into peaceful, eternal rest.  She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Jerome Gilbert and Roy Gilbert; and one sister, Laurie West.

She leaves to cherish her memories:  two daughters, Wendy L. Gilbert (Ronald Bryan) of Yemassee, SC, and Adrienne Gilbert of Charleston, SC; four brothers, Josiah (Thelma) Gilbert of Lake Placid, FL, Albert (Eartha) Alston of Charleston, SC, Gerald (Leila) Gilbert and Whitfield (Hilda) Gilbert of Dale, SC; one adopted sister, Thomasena (Lewis) Wright of Parkers Ferry, SC; four grandchildren;  a special cousin, Rosabell Gibson of Dale, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service 12 noon, Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Dale, SC.  Arrangements by Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort.
