Missionary Addie Smith was born April 6, 1940 to the parentage of the late John C. Capers and Minnie Lee Robinson Capers. One of twelve children, she attended Hampton County public schools.  At an early age, she joined the St. John Baptist Church, Varnville, SC. There she was baptized and served humbly as an usher until she relocated to Brooklyn, NY. In Brooklyn, Mother  Smith  served on the Missionary Board of First Baptist Church (Coney Island Cathedral), Coney Island, NY, under the leadership of Bishop Walin Hobbs.  Growing up in a large family, the love of God was instilled in her heart.
On October 15, 1956, she was joyously joined in holy matrimony with the late Ernest Smith, and together, the blessing of nine children. A daughter, Diane Smith, and eight siblings, Janie Lee (Toby) Cason, Dorthy Eady, Patsy C. (July) Terry, Rufus Capers, Sunny Capers, Adolf Capers, Ella Mae (David) McBride, and Mary Lee Capers, preceded her in death.
A loving mother and caregiver, she always said, “Family is everything, and her children are her planet!” His loving words continue to resound in the heart of her children and grand children.
Called from labor to reward, she succumbed, entering the peace of God’s rest on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Medical University of South Carolina.
