John Allen Holmes

John Allen Holmes, 72 of Walterboro, SC passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022, at his residence. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home. We welcome you to provide your thoughts and memories on our tribute wall. 

John Allen Holmes the son of the late Harry and Lilly Holmes, (biological son of Inez Brown), was born June 7, 1949 in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was educated in the Colleton County Public School system and graduated with the class of 1967. At an early age John Allen was a member of St. John A.M.E Church in Cottageville, SC.
While attending Colleton High School, John Allen had his eyes on one special young lady whom later became his wife. He met Gloria J. Elliott while in 10th grade and would often offer to carry her books. After graduation they continue their friendship. They fell madly in love and got married October 17, 1973. To this union three children were born: Ericka, Kelly and Scott Holmes.
Being a lifelong resident of Cottageville and Walterboro, John Allen wasn’t a stranger to anyone that cross his path. John Allen was an exceptional, intelligent, articulate, and kind-hearted man. He inspired so many and always knew exactly what to say to encourage the next person and remind them that they had a purpose. He worked various jobs over the years, the most recent as a Correctional Officer Supervisor at Liber Correction until his health began to fail.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, May 1, 2022, John Allen transitioned to his heavenly home. He will be remembered by many as a loving father, grandfather,  son, brother, uncle and many other roles he shined through.
John Allen leaves to cherish precious memories: his loving wife of forty-eight years Gloria J. Elliott Holmes, children; Ericka Holmes Carter (James), Columbia, SC, Kelly Holmes (Stacey), Walterboro, SC and Scott Holmes, Columbia, SC, his biological mother Inez Brown, Walterboro, SC; sisters; Mary Ann Fulton, Daytona Beach, FL, Janice Brown, Trina White, Helen Brown, and Gwendolyn Brown, all of Walterboro, SC, brothers; William Brown and Michael (Dale) Brown, Walterboro, SC, and Jerry (Cynthia) Brown, Jamaica Queens, NY; grandchildren; Erra Roundtree, Columbia, SC, Austin Holmes, Samyiah Holmes, Walterboro, SC, Scott Holmes, Bryson Holmes, Columbia, SC, and great grand Andres Evan-Jeffery Hair, loving Elliott sisters-in-law and brothers, along with a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, other relatives and close friends.
